Wrapping up the week with a new show

a show for social media

A show that speaks to an online community. A show with presenters having a conversation with the audience. An exchange between two women having fun doing their job.

This is what my colleague Ana Maria Montero and I had in mind.

We decided we wanted to give it a try and recorded a test show. The content can be changed and adapted as we go, but when it comes to the tone and style, we are pretty satisfied. We’d love to hear your thoughts and if you would enjoy watching this show once a week:

From hand sanitizer and crisis prep to the Wuhan shake, Ana Maria Montero and Tanya König break down the stories that got people talking on social media and ...

how to make your own hand sanitizer

This week was all about coronavirus again. It’s a tragic situation for many countries and people around the world. Masks and hand sanitizers are either sold out or more expensive that usual.

We had the idea of doing a tutorial on how to make your own hand sanitizer?

My cameraman and I searched for some recipes and came across a few including one by the World Health Organization. The WHO recommends high-volume ethanol of 96%, but we were just able to get 70% of ethanol at our pharmacy. This was still fine, as the end result needs to contain at least 60% of ethanol. This is one of the reasons why your ordinary vodka won’t do the job!

I added two more ingredients from other recipes which included exchanging glycerin with aloe vera gel and adding a few drops of essent oil to give it a better smell. What I didn’t say and has been critized by some was that you can’t just add a bit more of this and that, as it will dilute the volume of the ethanol in the end product. So if you buy a 70% volume alcohol, you have less freedom to add more glycerin to make it thicker.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Here’s the math for the recipe you see in the video now which ends up containing 65% of ethanol in the end product.

Here are the ingredients I used:

150 ml ethanol (70%, ideally higher)

7.5 ml hydrogen peroxide

2.6 ml glycerin (or aloe vera gel)

Optional: 6-8 drops of essential oil

Here’s the math using the ingredients above assuming 1 drop of oil is 0.05 ml:

(150*0.7)/(150+7.5+2.6+8*0.05) = 105/160.5 = 65.4% ethanol
